Down the Hill our Economy Goes
Day after day businesses continue to close, just yesterday a local store by the neighborhood closed because fresh products were no longer available. That was a bummer! Quinceanera and dress businesses in Huntington Park have begun to close down because people are no longer consuming and it’s like OMG because with prom coming up, where will I get my dress! Many have lost their jobs and many have been underemployed as well, take my sister for example. She works at the Huntington Park Chamber of Commerce and she hasn’t lost her job yet but now she works four days a week instead of five. I mean when she worked the whole week she barely made enough to pay her bills and have enough for gas. Now that she is working four days a week she walks to work since it is not as far and tries to stay home during the weekend so she does not waste gas. I think it sucks! We are all being affected by the oil shortage which is why I have begun making healthier and wiser decisions. I have begun buying organic products, walking, riding my bike, or simply taking the bus and metro to get around but sometimes it is exhausting. The weather is not always fresh, the sun is very bright and when I walk or ride my bike I tend to sweat and it’s nasty, especially after a while when I begin to feel all sticky. With the shortage of oil, many are no longer using their cars, causing the few metro transits that are available to be full. It’s such a fuzz at times.
Gas prices seem to rising every week which is why I have begun riding the bus to get to school and come back home. Now I cannot have the luxury of having my mom take and pick me up from school because I feel that I am just making her waste more money on as.
Elasticity is playing an important role in this economic crisis because people are now purchasing substitute products for the original products which are expensive, substitutes are much cheaper and affordable. People are demanding less of the things that they were once able to afford and are trying to find the cheapest products that substitute those others. Now I am not buying coffee from star bucks but instead going to the donut shop for some.
